The official Supreme Court decision regarding the unconstitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The decision was based on the case brought by Edith Windsor, who was forced to pay Federal Estate tax when her spouse, Thea Spyer, passed away. Both were legally married in Canada, and residents of New York, which recognized their union.
