Using the 1990 Decennial Census

The 1990 Decennial Census contains very detailed "ethnic" data in several volumes. The most important are the following:

Social and Economic Characteristics CP-2: New Jersey, available in three parts [Part 1, Part 2, Part 3]

Contains tables on

  • Race and Hispanic Origin (Tables 4, 5, 6, and 7) for the State and Urban and Rural - covers the state, counties, and places with 2,500 or more persons
  • Ancestry (Tables 17, 137, 166, and 195) for the State, Urban and Rural, County, and Places
  • Nativity, Citizenship, Year of Entry, Area of Birth, and Language Spoken at Home (Tables 18, 32, 138, 167, and 195) for the State, Urban and Rural, County, and Places
  • Place of Birth of Foreign-Born Persons (Tables 19, 139, and 168) for the State, Urban and Rural, County, and Places

Contains much useful information, but the data is provided only at the national level

 

Ancestry of the Population in the United States CP-3-2

Contains much useful information, but the data is provided only at the national level

 

Persons of Hispanic Origin in the United States CP-3-3

Contains much useful information, but the data is provided only at the national level

 

Detailed Ancestry Groups for States CP-S-1-2

Contains much useful information, but the data is provided only at the state level
