Getting Started with LibGuides: An Introduction for Cheng Librarians: Types of Content Items / Assets

A Guide to creating and developing your own research guides for subjects and individual courses using the LibGuides software.

Types of Content Items Available in LibGuides

You can create the following types of content within boxes in LibGuides. Except for Rich Text / HTML, all of these are stored within LibGuides as re-usable assets:

Rich Text / HTML - Rich Text/Dynamic Content/Scripts is the most versatile box type, for any type of formatted text, HTML, or JavaScript code, or embedded widgets.

Database - Enables you to add one or more databases from the Library's databases directory.

Link - Links enable you to create (and re-use) web links. Each item can have a short description which typically appears underneath the item.

Media / Widget - This enables you to embed a streaming video inside your page. The video can reside on any video sharing sites. You will be prompted to enter the full <embed>... code for the video which resides on a remote site, and the system will display the said video inside the box.

Book from the Catalog - This enables you to enter (and re-use) links to book records in the Library Catalog or other databases (e.g., an open textbook repository). You can enter the book Title/Author/ISBN/URL, and display the book cover for the item.

Document / File - Documents/Files content box enables you to upload any number of files to your page.

RSS Feed - This enables you to display the contents of an RSS feed inside this box. You will be asked to provide the URL of the RSS feed (in a standard rss/xml/atom format) and the system will display the feed items inside the box.

Guide List - This enables you to create lists of other guides in your system.

Poll - This enables you to create a poll on your page. Create a question and enter up to 6 choices for your poll. Each poll choice can have assoicated url, and you can view the results of the poll in real time.

Google Search - Enable visitors to search Google inside your guide. You can configure each asset to search either Google, Google Books, Google Scholar, or Google Patents.
