Celebrating Women's History: Women in Politics

The “Women in politics: 2019” map, created by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and UN Women, depicts global rankings for women in the executive and parliamentary branches of government as of 1 January 2019. The map shows progress towards gender equality in these areas at regional and national levels.

A project of the Institute for Women's Policy Research, the "Status of Women in the States" provides data on women’s progress in 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the United States overall. The data can be used to raise awareness, improve policies, and promote women’s equality.

The Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is nationally recognized as the leading source of scholarly research and current data about women’s political participation in the United States. Its mission is to promote greater knowledge and understanding about the role of women in American politics, enhance women's influence in public life, and expand the diversity of women in politics and government.

The women in politics indicator includes data on: Women parliamentarians: the share of women in the national lower or single houses of parliament. Measured as a percentage of total parliamentarians. Women ministers: the share of women ministers, including deputy prime ministers and ministers. Prime ministers/heads of government were also included when they held ministerial portfolios.
