Reference Management Software: Zotero and Mendeley: Mendeley Reference Manager

A guide to free reference management software you can use to collect and store references, create bibliographies, and annotate papers.

Mendeley Reference Manager

Mendeley Reference Manager is a free web-based application designed to store your bibliographic references and copies of cited documents. With the installation of its companion plug-in software Mendeley Cite (for Microsoft Word in Office 365), you can access your personal Mendeley library of references to generate in-text citations and full reference lists/bibliographies using any of the major citation styles. Mendeley also offers a browser plug-in called Mendeley Web Importer which can be used for bringing web page references into your personal library.

Add Web Pages to Your Bibliography with Mendeley Web Importer

Once you've created your personal Mendeley account, you can add the Mendeley Web Importer browser plug-in to your favorite web browser. Mendeley Web Importer makes it easy to add citation information about web pages to your library. PLEASE NOTE, however, that the Web Importer software usually has to "guess" which items on a web page are associated with citation elements like author, title, date, etc., so you should always check imported citations to ensure the information you need is correct and complete, editing as necessary.

Mendeley Reference Manager: Account Creation, App Installation, and Use

The current version of Mendeley Reference Manager is an exclusively web-based application, and the previous "Desktop" version is no longer supported. To begin using Mendeley Reference Manager, you will first need to visit the Mendeley website and create your free account. Once your account is created, proceed to the Mendeley Reference Manager page to download/install its application program on your machine. After installation, running the app will launch and prompt you to login with your account credentials.

From the opening screen, you should then select the "Library" link to view the interface for your personal bibliographic database. From there you can add and organize references.
