Fall 2024 newsletter for the College of Education

Welcome Back!

Welcome back for the 2024-2025 academic year!  And for those of you who are new to WP, welcome!

Below, you'll find information to help you and your students to make the most of what the Library has to offer.  As your liaison librarians for the College of Education, we're here to assist with anything from requests for new materials to partnering with you to help your students succeed -- even if you're teaching asynchronously!

Feel free to share this with anyone that we've missed, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Have a great Fall 2024 semester!

Neil & Tony

Scheduling Instruction

As you finalize your assignments for this semester’s courses, keep in mind how we can partner with you to present students with important information literacy skills to support their success!

Your class may be their first introduction or (equally important) the refresher they need to build and maintain their research skills!

Library instruction:

  • Starts everyone with the same skills
  • Can cover topics beyond simple searching (ask us!)
  • Are aligned to your assignments
  • Are available for in-person and online (including fully asynchronous!) courses

Schedule your session today with our Instruction Request Form or contact us for more information at instruction@wpunj.edu!

OER

Finding the right OER or zero-cost alternatives to traditional textbooks can be difficult. But using these resources can make a big difference to students by reducing course costs and making materials immediately available. The Cheng Library provides a variety of resources and supports to help you transition to OER and zero-cost options.

Questions? Contact me, Richard Kearney, or Dave Williams (for Pressbooks)!

Do You Have My Textbook?

One of the most frequent questions we get at the start of each semester is "Do you have my textbook?"

Use Course Reserves to share copies of textbooks, articles, media, and other course materials with students! You can lend us personal copies or contact us for help locating something in our collections.

Learn more on our Course Reserves page or contact Jill Pruden (prudenj@wpunj.edu; 973-720-3183) with any questions.

New Databases!

Kanopy BASE

Faculty who use streaming video in their classes will welcome our new subscription to the Kanopy BASE collection. The collection includes over 9,500 videos on a wide variety of subjects, including health, applied science, biology and environmental sciences, and many other subjects, and consists of documentaries, feature films, and television programming.

Distributors include Kino Lorber, PBS, IFC Films, New Day Films, and many others (see the complete title list). Content can be used for any type of course and can be screened in the classroom or made available to students through direct links.

Open Access Theses and Dissertations

Due to changes in our database subscriptions earlier this year, we made the difficult decision to retire ProQuest Dissertations & Theses.  Fortunately, the ever-growing number of institutional repositories and freely available thesis and dissertation collections have provided a great alternative!

Open Access Theses and Dissertations (OATD) is a resource for finding over 6.9 million open access graduate theses and dissertations published around the world. This is in addition to those publications already available through our existing databases!

And, as always, content that is not freely available may be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

Counseling and Therapy in Video: Classic and Volume III

Not a new database, but definitely one worth mentioning!  This database consists of 815 videos focused on counseling sessions and covering a wide range of theories and skills, including diverse clients and issues. World renowned therapists such as Albert Ellis, Violet Oaklander, Derald Wing Sue, and John Norcross demonstrate their methods and techniques for putting theoretical concepts into practice. The videos provide a firm grounding in the theoretical modalities of counseling and psychotherapy while expanding into new and emerging areas such as social media, veterans, cyberbullying, mindfulness, and neuro

Student Support

Reference and research support is a great supplement to library instruction, and way for struggling students to get assistance. If you are unable to schedule a library instruction session, but students will be using the library for your assignments, please consider sharing the assignment with me ahead of time.

You and your students can also reach out to your department's dedicated Librarian Liaison.

On Demand Library Tutorials

The Library offers a number of on demand tutorials to help you and your students with common questions.  Below are a few timely videos for the start of the semester.  See a full listing on our Tutorials page.

Material Requests

https://pixabay.com/illustrations/icon-shopping-cart-e-commerce-1728552/We welcomes suggestions for purchases of titles and materials that are not currently part of our collection. Requests will be evaluated by subject librarians, based on availability of funds, collection needs, and relevance to the University curriculum.

Reach out to me directly, or use one of the forms below to place your requests:

Please keep in mind that the library does not maintain a collection of textbooks, although we encourage faculty to provide spare copies for our Course Reserves collection or to consider Open Educational Resources (OER) alternatives!

Interlibrary Loan's New Look!

If you're a regular user of Interlibrary Loan, you may have noticed that our portal has a sleek new look and feel.

While our services are the same high quality as before, we hope that you find the new interface to be more user friendly.

Haven't seen it yet?  Pop over to our Interlibrary Loan & Article Copy page today!

Library Webinars & Events

We have a number of webinars for students to learn about research, resources, and to engage with the library.  A number of our offerings are eligible for the WP LEARN badge (learn more).

Check out our full schedule of upcoming events on our Workshops & Webinars page.

Webinars can also be scheduled for specific courses or programs!  If you're interested, please reach out to me directly or complete an instruction request.
