Welcome Back!

Welcome back for Spring 2025 semester!

Below, you'll find information to help you and your students to make the most of what the Library has to offer.  As your liaison librarians for the College of Education, we're here to assist with anything from requests for new materials to partnering with you to help your students succeed -- even if you're teaching asynchronously!

Feel free to share this with anyone that we've missed, and we look forward to hearing from you!

Have a great Spring 2025 semester!

Neil & Tony

Information Literacy & Libraries

Teaching information literacy (IL) is an important part of librarians' work, but sometimes this role is equated with simply teaching students how to use databases to find articles.

What many folks don't know is that our IL efforts are guided by the Association of College and Research Libraries' (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

This document organizes IL into six frames that can be used to understand and navigate complex issues surrounding scholarly research:

  • Authority Is Constructed and Contextual
  • Information Creation as a Process
  • Information Has Value
  • Research as Inquiry
  • Scholarship as Conversation
  • Searching as Strategic Exploration

While these issues have always been relevant to student learning, the emergence of AI makes makes it even more important that students be responsible users of information.

As you plan your courses for this semester, consider how we might move beyond the database demonstration model of library instruction and begin to have more sophisticated conversations around these ideas.

Schedule Today!

There's still time to schedule an instruction session with me for the Spring semester!

Tell me a little about your assignment and we can work together to customize lessons that address your specific learning outcomes. We can also move beyond the mechanics of searching to discuss issues of information quality, academic scholarship, plagiarism and copyright, etc.

Trying out a new assignment? Let's talk to see how a research session can help!

The Library has a number of ways to help you locate Open Access (OA) or Open Educational Resources (OER).

New Materials!

We are constantly improving our digital collections, and we've reviewed our list of newly licensed materials to select the following Ebook titles that may be of interest to you and your students.

New Ebook titles (see Permalinks below):

Consider using all or part of our ebooks (every chapter helps!) as alternatives to traditional textbooks to move toward OER/Zero-Cost course materials.  Have questions?  Let us know!

Newly Acquired Resources

Have a book, film, or other item that you think we should add to the Library collections? Submit your recommendation through our Request & Suggest Materials page!

* Please note that our Collection Development Policy does not allow for the purchase of textbooks.

Also remember that our Interlibrary Loan & Article Copy Service is a great resource for accessing hard to get materials or items that exist physically in our Library.  These services are available to students and faculty at no cost.

  • Use Interlibrary Loan to borrow books and materials from other libraries around the world
  • Use the Article Copy Service to get scans of print articles and book chapters from our collection

If you haven't seen the new design of our Interlibrary Loan & Article Copy Service portal, now's a perfect time to check it out.
