NUR4305: Nursing Leadership and Professional Practice: Supportive Resources

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Quality Indicators (QIs) are measures that organizations can apply to inpatient hospital data to assess and improve health care quality, identify areas that need further study and investigation, and track changes over time. The AHRQ QI modules represent aspects such as Prevention, Inpatient, Patient Safety, and Pediatric quality of care.

In alignment with AONL's strategic initiatives, the AONL Workforce Committee and subcommittees identified best practices and innovations to help strategize and manage the complexities of the nursing workforce. The goal of the AONL Workforce Compendium is to bring these best practices and innovations together to be shared widely, to support and empower nurse leaders in attaining, retaining, and sustaining environments where nurses want to work and feel like they belong. Information in this compendium will be updated periodically as information becomes available.

The capacity and well-being of the U.S. health workforce has been under threat for years by an epidemic of burnout, and the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this systems issue. Now more nurses, physicians, and state and local public health department employees than ever are considering leaving their professions. Recognizing that the function of the U.S. health system is at stake, the NAM released the National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being in October 2022 to drive collective action to strengthen health workforce well-being and restore the health of the nation.

This report explores how nurses can work to reduce health disparities and promote equity, while keeping costs at bay, utilizing technology, and maintaining patient and family-focused care into 2030. This work builds on the foundation set out by The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2011) report.

The New Jersey Collaborating Center for Nursing(NJCCN) is the primary source for data on New Jersey’s nursing workforce. The 2023 edition of the Nursing Data and Analysis Report provides insights on the workforce supply and demand data across setting.

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), American Nurses Association (ANA), American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) launched a nurse staffing think tank to find solutions to the nurse staffing crisis. The Think Tank brings together nurses, leaders and other stakeholders. As a collective, the Think Tank worked over three months to develop actionable strategies set to implement within 12-18 months with measurable outcomes that will address the nurse staffing crisis.

The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project addresses the challenge of preparing future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) necessary to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work. This website is a central repository of information on the core QSEN competencies, KSAs, teaching strategies, and faculty development resources designed to best support this goal.
