With the implementation of the Common Core Standards, deep reading of more complex text has become the focus of classroom reading instruction. This workshop will examine instructional strategies and activities that are designed to increase the older learner's comprehension of difficult text. Multiple ways to integrate high-quality Young Adult literature to motivate students will also be presented.

The Institute includes a presentation by young adult author, Todd Strasser. Mr. Strasser has written many critically acclaimed novels for adults, teenagers, and children, including the award-winning Can't Get There from Here, Give a Boy a Gun, Boot Camp, If I Grow Up, The Wave, Famous, and How I Created My Perfect Prom Date, which became the Fox feature film Drive Me Crazy.
