Online Geographical Sources

This is just a sampling of geographical sources that you can find online, but the idea of combining GIS data with a variety of different subjects and themes to provide value added content.

Often a Google search incorporating the terms 'map', 'mapping', 'geographical' or 'GIS' can be used to locate map tools for a specific topic area.

Google Sky
A navigable and searchable map of the skies from Earth's perspective, with overlays of constellations and the ability to zoom in on specific stars, nebulae, etc.
Google Earth
A downloadable map 'browser' that allows you to rotate the globe and search for places, businesses, etc. Also offers the ability to look at specialized collections, such as Ancient Rome, and to explore the moon, Mars, and the night skies. For more information, see: Google Earth Showcase
Google Maps Mania (blog)
This blog offers links to a variety of mapping sources, including those that map out cheap gas prices, demographics, and a variety of other tools and mashups. Use the search option to see if there are any sources on your topic!
Pew Research Center Interactive
Access to a number of interactive features from the Pew Research Center website, including interactive maps, quizzes and data.
American Memory: Map Collections
A collection of historic maps held by the Library of Congress and accessible online.
AIRNOW.gov
Created by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency of the U.S.), the maps on this site provide information about air quality across the country, including data for individual cities.
Latinos by Geography (Pew Hispanic Center)
Found using a topic search and map keyword, this interactive map of the United States shows where the largest Hispanic populations are, by decade (1980-2009).
HealthMap
An interactive map which tracks diseases and illness as posted from a variety of sources, "including online news aggregators, eyewitness reports, expert-curated discussions and validated official reports".
Community Nutrition Mapping Project
Created and maintained by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this series of maps provides a state-by-state comparison of nutritional intake (vitamins and recommended foods).
