NURS6170: Legal Issues for School Nurses: Federal Legal Resources

This guide provides links to federal and state legal resources relevant to this course.

Federal Legal Resources in Lexis/Nexis Academic

Click on the Databases link, then click on the letter L to access Lexis/Nexis Academic from Cheng Library's homepage. You can locate New Jersey and Federal cases, statutes and code. For your convenience, a link to Lexis/Nexis is provided below. If you are off-campus, you will need to enter your William Paterson user name and password.

Lexis/Nexis Academic  From the main search screen, click on Search by Subject or Topic. From the menu on the left you can search for Cases, Statutes, Codes and Regulations. You can search by keyword or by legal citation. To locate Federal material, follow these steps:

  • For cases (decisions, opinions), click on Federal & State cases. Limit your search to Federal cases by selecting All Federal Cases from the drop down menu. Enter one or two keywords or a phrase. Click on search. You should also sort your results by relevance.
  • For statutes (laws), click on Federal Statutes, Codes & Regulations. Be sure to search only the Annotated US Code (USCS).
  • For codes (regulations), click on click on Federal Statutes, Codes & Regulations. Be sure to search only the CFR-Code of Federal Regulations. Links are embedded throughout cases, statutes and codes and you may find them useful. Also be sure to use the email, save and print features within the database.

Federal Legal Basics of Education

The United States Department of Education provides an overview of federal legislation, policies and regulations pertaining to elementary and secondary schools.

The Law Library of the Library of Congress provides an extensive overview of the federal legal system.

The United States Courts site provides an overview of the federal court system.

The site is the source for federal legislative information. It provides several options for finding bills, resolutions, and legislative information.

The United States Code is the codification of all federal laws.

The Code of Federal Regulations is the codification of rules issued by federal departments and agencies of the government.
